The Pelham is a bit that offers additional leverage on the mouth. Additional pressure is placed on the lower jaw bones by means of a chinstrap/chain. Pelhams can be used with one or two reins offering different options for the reins.

Pressure is applied directly to the horse's tongue if only a bit rein is used. If the horse raises its head, it makes sense to use a second rein on the bottom of the pelham's legs to add pressure to the horse's neck. The horse will try to avoid the pressure by lowering its head. The bridle should be used at a maximum angle of 45º to prevent the horse from lowering its head too much.
